The History of Weedon Island

By: Kathleen Gilmore

Weedon Island Preserve, located on the eastern coast of the Pinellas peninsula, is not just a rich coastal system, but also abundant in cultural legacy. For over 10,000 years, people have made Weedon Island their home and have enjoyed its lands and waters. Throughout this time, many changes have been made to the landscape that have been historically documented and often physically preserved. This evidence allows us to understand how life on Weedon Island has changed over time, and how it has led to the Weedon Island Preserve that we continue to enjoy today.

An important part of the history of Weedon Island is its significance as an archaeological site. Throughout the years, different excavations have taken place on the island, which help us to learn more about the people who lived here before.
