2022 Hands-On Adult Archaeology Camp
Join Alliance for Weedon Island Research and Education (AWIARE) in discovering the prehistory of the Tampa Bay region. Volunteers will work with professional archaeologists to uncover the rich cultures of the past. Participants in the Hands-On Weedon Adult Archaeology Camps will help scientists investigate the early people who once were inhabitants of Weedon Island and their surrounding environment. Learn about their lifestyle and beliefs through field and lab work, lectures and tours.
We are offering two camps in winter/spring 2022. Each camp is limited to 8 participants per week.
Daily camp schedule: 8:30am -4:30pm NOTE: Please arrive 15 minutes prior to each day's events.
Masks will be required of everyone while indoors. Non-vaccinated participants are required to wear masks at all times.

Registration Fee: $495 per week. A 15% discount is applied for campers who attend both weeks, ($915.75). Registration fee includes daily lunches, as well as snacks. All other meals and lodging are not included. We are offering returning campers from last summer an additional discount. Please submit your choice by selecting under "Returning Participants". All returning applicants will be verified.

Itinerary Day 1
9:00 AM: Meet at AWIARE Research Station for introductions and orientation.
9:30-10:15 AM: Introductory lecture on Tampa Bay Archaeology by archaeologist, Dr. Robert Austin.
10:15-11:30 AM: Introduction to Lab, and analysis of previous findings and artifacts of site.
11:30-12:30 PM: Lunch
12:30-3:30 PM: Hike to field site, view previous excavations with introduction to excavating. Kendal Jackson, PhD. candidate, will discuss University of South Florida’s archaeological site research. Begin excavating.
4:00-4:30 PM: Return to Research Station.

8:30 AM-12 PM: Excavate at field site or analyze artifacts in lab and process findings.
12:00-1:00 PM: Lunch at AWIARE Research Station
1:00-4:30 PM: Excavate at field site or analyze artifacts in lab and process findings.
Itinerary Day 5
8:30-9:00 AM: Review finds and artifacts
9:00-10:30 AM: Walk to Weedon Island Cultural and Natural History Center to view the 1000-year-old Weedon Island dugout canoe and Center museum.
10:30 AM-11:30 PM: Week 1: Travel by cars to visit Phillipi Park archaeology site with talk by Dr. Tom Pluckhahn, USF Professor.
Week 2: Travel by cars to visit Anderson Mound site on Boca Ciega Bay.
1:00-2:00 PM: Farewell lunch and departure.
